The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up using double-pointed needles – alternatively, you could use a 40cm circular needle and the magic loop technique for the crown.

The cowl is worked in the round using a 60cm circular needle. This cowl starts with an i-cord cast on and ends with an i-cord cast off. Alternatively, you can cast on 115 sts with the long tail method and finish with an ordinary chain cast off, then work an applied i-cord around the edges.

Although it is worked flat and so you could use straight needles, we strongly recommend using a circular needle because the large number of stitches will not fit comfortably on standard straight needles. The border of the Deirdre Shawl is worked from side to side—the cables change direction in the center and form a diamond shape. Stitches are then picked up from the long edge, and the body is shaped with short-rows. I-cord edges along both ends add a finishing touch.

This pullover is knitted in one piece with dolman sleeves, and the body is decorated with an allover eyelet and cable pattern, which then returns and runs along the top of the sleeves. The pullover is worked in the round from the bottom up to the armholes and the sleeves and yoke are worked flat.
